We, the kind-hearted members of Soft Speaker, urge you to set aside a small place in your heart for the underappreciated, hardworking Krampus. Please do join us this Friday at Beat Kitchen to celebrate an unsung holiday hero:

Krampus is the dark companion of St. Nicholas, the traditional European winter gift-bringer who rewards good children each December. The kindly old Saint leaves the task of punishing bad children to a hell-bound counterpart known by many names across the continent — Knecht Ruprecht, Certa, Perchten, Black Peter, Schmutzli, Pelznickel, Klaubauf, and Krampus. Usually seen as a classic devil with horns, cloven hooves and monstrous tongue, but can also be spotted as a sinister gentleman dressed in black or a hairy man-beast. Krampus punishes the naughty children, swatting them with switches and rusty chains before dragging them in baskets to a fiery place below.

This will be Soft Speaker’s final headlining show of 2012. The enigmatic Randall Nieman, aka Füxa, is on board to delight with analog synthesizers and neon-encrusted jazzballs. If you speak to him with a tender tongue, mayhap he will regale you with stories of granular evenings spent in Tennessee recording with the late, legendary Jim Dickinson and Pete Kember (aka Sonic Boom). Sandwiched between our glossy bosoms and Mr. Nieman will be Tin Tin Can, tooting and purring into the orifices of your mindhead. Soft Speaker will be celebrating one of their own on Saturday the 29th of September at their debut show at the Burlington. Nick turns the corner on another year the day prior so it only seems fitting to slather fuzz tones amongst the faces of our so inclined friends and fans to ring it in.

My Chancellor is in need of a remedy that can be carefully administered and monitored, while still giving him the impression that the dosage is irrelevant. My friend will be treated with Turkish Mindbathers of several types, and although the strength and action of a single pill would leave a normal-minded man in a daze; for my Chancellor, several pills throughout the day will give him rest and happy dreams. This will, I believe, not only calm his mind, but yield ultimately to him what he has screamed in the night desiring and never attaining: a sense of clarity and clear-mindedness while still retaining the essence of the brilliance and creativity that he has always possessed.

-An excerpt from page 33/197 of an official (restricted letter) dated May, 1931 from Doktor R.W. Großenlicht von Weißglühendfeure, the personal physician to Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss, as translated by The Semisynthetic Arkiv. From the Private Chancellery Printing and Archival Services of Austria.

The Soft Pack / Grass Widow / Soft Speaker @ Beat KItchen

What can you soften? You can soften your brain. You can soften a crunchy towel with water. You can soften the blow to an ex by informing him or her that your new lover is horribly disfigured and frighteningly repellent. Please … do come to the concert and tell us what you would like to soften or what you have had the pleasure and privilege of softening so far this year. In return, we will shower you with … well, let’s just say that we will shower you.

New LP: The Jockey (coming April 20, 2012)

We are pleased to announce details of our next release, SSPKR-008, The Jockey.  It will be available on a limited edition cd on April 20, 2012 at our show with Sleepy Sun and White Hills at Subterranean.  At some point before the show, we will make it available as a digital download.  More on that to come.  This album features eight (8) Soft Speaker songs reinterpreted by artists that we highly respect and admire.  In addition, there is one live-in-the-studio track entitled, “P.E.P.,” that we recorded while taking a break from mastering Vortrobos.

You have briefly emerged from your mid-winter hibernation to harvest a snack from a lush hedgerow of gooseberries. Their spiny stems, as you know, provide protection from the pesky magpie moth caterpillar. Before returning to your cave, you are welcome to sup with us if you wish. May we sample your gooseberries, so moist and oddly familiar in both texture and flavor? Do enjoy a sip of our fresh mead. Please, lend your ears to the delicate and nimble fingers of our town minstrels. Be fair warned, their seemingly polite melodies oft grow ferocious and in rare cases, result in temporary delirium. Said minstrels will perform at designated times, as listed above. Their song cycles, also referred to as “minstrel cycles”, are each clever and unique.
